The 25 Best Athens Restaurants

Quintessential Greek food across all styles and price points.

As the birthplace of the modern Olympics, classical art, democracy, and Western civilization at large, Athens is justly regarded as one of the most important cultural centers in the world. Boasting archaeological sites and ancient ruins, world-class museums and stunning beaches, and thriving dining and nightlife scenes that only get bigger and better as the weather cools, Athens offers something for everyone.

Here at Journy, we've planned thousands of trips to Greece—Athens included—and have developed deep local knowledge on the city's best restaurants, from fine dining to family-friendly. We've tasted our fair share of souvlaki and moussaka, chowed down on late night, fast food gyros, sipped Greek wine, scoured the scene for gluten-free and vegetarian options, stumbled across some outdoor seating *gems*, explored the spots inside Athens hotels, and ventured to every corner of the city—from Kolonaki to Plaka to Gazi. Below are 25 of our favorite Athenian eateries.

When you travel with Journy, your personal trip designer will provide up-to-date information on specific COVID-19 policies and considerations.

1Yiasemi - Γιασεμί

Mnisikleous 23, Athina 105 55, Greece
This adorable cafe serves simple and comforting Greek bistro fare in a charming setting. Small tables dot the stairs of an idyllic alley garden strung with lights, while the dining room exudes 19th-century elegance. Don't miss the lemon pie—its flavor and richness makes it one of the best desserts we've ever eaten. Protip: Avoid this restaurant on the weekends. It gets packed.

2Avli (Η Αυλη)

Pl. Agiou Dimitriou 12, Athina 105 54, Greece
Situated in an historic Athens triangle, Avli—which translates to "backyard"—is a cozy and friendly taverna with local vibes and a dependable menu. You’ll find a simple courtyard with wooden tables, navy blue shuttered windows, and Greek music. Sip beer, wine, or raki (an anise-flavored liquor), then chow down on mezze such as zucchini croquettes with yogurt, spiced meatballs, Greek fries, marinated spicy peppers, and taramasalata dip.
Sounds like something you’d like to experience? Trust the experts at Journy to build an itinerary from scratch just for you with all the must-see sights and hidden gems.

3Kuzina Restaurant

Adrianou 9, Athina 105 55, Greece
Kuzina in Monastiraki is the place to go for local fare, great drinks, and, most importantly, stellar views. Be sure to sit on the upper terrace for the best vantage point of the Acropolis. The best part? It's very reasonably priced considering the outstanding food and location. Reservations are highly recommended—it's a go-to spot for a sunset drink after a day exploring.

Kalamiotou 19, Monastiraki, Athens 105 60, Greece
Located near the Agias Eirinis Square, Melilotos is a local favorite, dishing out modern spins on traditional Greek fare. The restaurant is always packed, and its central location makes it popular with travelers and locals alike. Note that portion sizes are very generous, so come with a large appetite (or willingness to share)! You can expect more variety on the menu than your average Athens restaurant, which can be a welcome relief—especially if you're traveling with kids. Try the fig salad and sesame-crusted feta with tomato jam.

5To Kafeneio

Epicharmou 1, Athina 105 58, Greece
Kafeneio is a Plaka neighborhood favorite known for their traditional meze. The surrounding area may be tourist-heavy, but Kafeneio is decidedly low-key. Be sure to try the meatballs with THE sauce—we're not being hyperbolic, that's how people refer to the buzzed-about dish. This super cute spot is especially enchanting outside the patio, so try and snag a table there.

6Manimani restaurant

Falirou 10, Athina 117 42, Greece
True to its name, ManiMani in Makrygianni serves a lunch and dinner menu inspired by the cuisine of Mani, an island in the South of Greece. The homey restaurant is easy to miss (because it looks like a private home), but once you climb the stairs of the Neoclassical structure, you'll find an attentive staff ready to serve you reasonably priced Greek classics and stellar wines. Pork dishes are fantastic here, as is the vegetable ravioli and salad with chickpeas. ManiMani is definitely one of the better-kept secrets in Athens and a step up from your traditional Greek taverna.

Adrianou 29, Athina 105 55, Greece
MOMA is a modern, hip restaurant with a spectacular view of the Acropolis. Alongside its lovely atmosphere, you'll find traditional Greek fare (lots of meats, fresh vegetables, and honey-forward desserts). This is a wonderful place to have lunch, an afternoon coffee, or dinner after sightseeing—just be sure to make a reservation since the views are a big draw.

8Black Sheep / Mavro Provato

Arrianou 31, Athina 116 35, Greece
Μαύρο Πρόβατο (Black Sheep) is an updated version of a classic Greek taverna. The tiny restaurant serves some of the “greatest hits” of Greek cuisine while mixing in new, creative dishes. Meze here is top notch, and the wine list can’t be beat. Portions are slightly smaller than the mountains of food you're sometimes served at similar restaurants, but it works in your favor since you can try more dishes. Be sure to reserve a table during the weekends—it can get very busy.

9GB Roof Garden

at Hotel Grande Bretagne, Vasileos Georgiou A 1, Athina 105 64, Greece
GB Roof Garden Restaurants & Bar is a Michelin-recommended restaurant with an elegant rooftop atmosphere. Located on the 8th floor of the Grande Bretagne Hotel, it offers stunning views of the bustling city streets, Syntagma Square, Lycabettus Hill, and the Acropolis. The kitchen dishes out contemporary Mediterranean plates like Greek salad with barley rusks and seafood "bolognese" while the bar whips up expert cocktails made with local liquors and fresh fruit. Be sure to reserve a table in advance.

10Mono | Wine Restaurant

Mpenizelou Paleologou, Athina 105 56, Greece
Located in Plaka, Mono is a beautiful Mediterranean restaurant featuring a simple yet elegant modern design. Expect artful presentations of unique Greek dishes made from fresh, local, and organic ingredients. A meal—with liberal amounts of wine–will run you €60 to €70.

11POINT a (Acropolis Point)

Rovertou Galli 4, Athina 117 42, Greece
Located on the rooftop of the Herodion Hotel is POINT a, a restaurant and bar with stellar views of the Acropolis and the illuminated New Acropolis Museum. The al fresco dining terrace with communal tables creates a relaxed atmosphere, which is the perfect complement to the light and eclectic Mediterranean fare. Food-wise, highlights include mackerel tartar with bergamot and olive, ravioli with octopus ragu, and lamb kebabs served on Cypriot pita bread.

12Blue Bird

6 105 57, Ipitou 4, Athina 105 57, Greece
A staple in the Athens bar and restaurant scene, Blue Bird offers food and cocktails in a lively and elegant environment. The menu is absurdly cheap (almost everything is less than €10), and features a range of vegetarian fare such as tabouli salads, curried vegetables, and quesadillas. Whether you’re here for lunch or a cocktail, Blue Bird excels across all channels. The live music, local art, and delicious food make this a favorite local hangout.

13Διογένης (Diogenes)

Pl. Lisikrati 1, Athina 105 58, Greece
Located in the heart of Plaka, Diogenis is an elegant restaurant serving classic Greek dishes, fresh seafood, and pastries. From the warm servers to the elegant decor, Diogenis has a celebratory atmosphere that makes for a memorable experience. In warm weather, dozens of tables populate the outside seating area, where diners enjoy grilled octopus and phyllo-wrapped feta cheese. Be sure to save some room for dessert—all of their homemade pastries are amazing, but we especially love the crepes stuffed with vanilla cream, sour cherry spoon fruit, and ice cream.

14κωστα - Kostas

Pl. Agias Irinis 2, Athina 105 60, Greece
Kostos is a storied street food shop that's been open since 1946. Step inside this no-frills spot, and you'll be greeted by an old-school grill that's used to cook up generous portions of high-quality pork. Enjoy it on freshly baked pita with sliced onion, yogurt, tomato, fries, fresh herbs, and Kostas's signature spicy red pepper sauce.

15Feyrouz Λαχματζούνια

Karori 23, Athina, Greece
Get your street food fix at Feyrouz, a local joint in the trendy area that surrounds Aiolou Street. The cafe specializes in authentic lahmajoun, a thin and round piece of grilled dough that’s topped and rolled with vegetables, minced meat, or simple spices—all of which can be paired with hummus, tabouleh, and spicy eggplant. While the lahmajoun is filling on its own, it can’t hurt to try one of the pies made with za’atar spice, too.

16Spondi Restaurant

Pirronos 5, Athina 116 36, Greece
Mediterranean and French cuisines meet at Spondi, a fine dining restaurant located in Pangrati, Athens. Spondi is the recipient of two Michelin stars and is noted for its elegant, modern interpretations of French cuisine as well as its beautiful, intimate dining spaces—two interior dining rooms, one designed like a cellar vault, and two courtyard patios covered in greenery and flowers. The wine list is also exceptional and focuses on vintages from Greece, France, and Italy. This is one of the best restaurants in Athens, so reservations are essential.

17Psaras Taverna

Erotokritou 12, Athina 105 56, Greece
This historic restaurant—whose complete name, Palia Taverna tou Psara, translates to "Old Fisherman's Tavern"—is located in a Neoclassical building in Plaka. It has been serving locals and travelers alike since 1898. Don't miss the lobster pasta—all the seafood is bought daily from the local fish market. And be sure to leave room for dessert. We're partial to the Loukoumades, which are made with leavened and deep fried dough soaked in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon.

Pl. Theatrou 2, Athina 105 52, Greece
Enjoy an intimate meal at Klimataria, an old-school taverna adorned with rustic stone walls, wine barrels, and checkered tablecloths. It’s the perfect place to chow down on classic Mediterranean dishes, kick back with locals, and enjoy live Greek music. Start your meal with traditional spinach pie—Klimataria’s versions is thick and stuffed with the region’s tastiest feta. Other highlights include tzatziki, fries topped with oregano, stuffed peppers, and beef simmered in tomato sauce with rice. Save room for complimentary dessert and shots of ouzo.

Nikis 30, Athina 105 57, Greece
Avocado is a favorite for vegans and vegetarians in Athens. The small restaurant is located in the Plaka area and serves exclusively plant-based food in a casual atmosphere. A variety of veggie burgers and pizzas fill the menu, as well as the favorite noodle dish: Zen Tempeh. Be sure to also check out their juices and creative desserts. The diverse, vegan-friendly menu means you might be coming back more than once during your stay!

207 Food Sins

Plateia Filomousou Etaireias 1, Αθήνα 105 58, Greece
7 Food Sins is a chic yet relaxed gastro pub in the heart of Plaka. Helmed by chef Dimos Samourakis, it offers an à la carte or tasting menu with five, eight, or 14 courses—as well as a dedicated vegetarian menu. Be sure to reserve a table—7 Food Sins was featured in the 2020 Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand, which has stirred up quite a bit of excitement around it. If the weather permits, request to eat al fresco on the rooftop.

21Cafe Avissinia

Kinetou 7, Athina 105 55, Greece
Cafe Avissinia opened in 1985 as a small tea houses and, over the years, has evolved into a bustling restaurant dishing out family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. It's located in the historic Monastiraki neighborhood and offers great views of the Acropolis. You can't go wrong with any of the menu items, but if it were up to us, we'd choose the traditional Smyrneic meatballs in tomato sauce with basmati rice or chicken with tomato and cumin sauce. And for dessert, strained yogurt prepared in the Thracian style with honey, nuts, and raisins. If you're there on the weekends from September to June, you'll also be treated to live music.

22Funky Gourmet

Παραμυθιάς 13 και Σαλαμίνος, Κεραμεικός, Κέντρο, Greece
Located in a Neoclassical house in downtown Athens, Funky Gourmet is a molecular gastronomy restaurant with dishes that are as theatrical as they are delicious and inventive (enough to earn the restaurant 2 Michelin stars). The modern interior design reflects the cutting-edge, avant-garde cuisine. Be sure to reserve a table at least two weeks in advance.

23Black Duck Garden

5 - 7, loannou Paparrigopoulou, Athina 105 61, Greece
Black Duck Garden is the ultimate escape from the bustling city streets. It's tucked away next to the Athens City Museum, which is where the first kings of Greece—Otto and Amalia—settled after their marriage. Arguably one of the best Greek restaurant-cafés in Athens, it's open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. The menu changes daily with a rotating selection of seasonally-inspired dishes. If you're there for afternoon coffee, it'll be served in a tin pot alongside a Turkish delight.

24Atitamos Mezedopoleio

Kapodistriou 2, Athina 106 83, Greece
You're more likely to find locals than travelers at the tucked-away Atitamos Mezedopoleio in central Athens. The menu is simple yet affordable, and heavy on the seafood (alongside the generous pours of house wine). Christos and Sofia will welcome you like family—and maybe even treat you to dessert on the house.

25Ama Lachei

Kallidromiou 69, Athina 106 83, Greece
Situated on Kallidromiou Street in the Exarcheia neighborhood, Ama Lachei is a charming restaurant with a courtyard cocooned by vines. It specializes in mezedhes (Greek meze), and every day there are a handful of new daily specials, including plenty of vegetarian options. The regional cheeses on offer are fantastic, as are the seafood appetizers—we're partial to the Kozani saffron-spiced orzo pasta with shrimp.
